Engdaget Mobile logoOk, it’s February 2006, got it. So that means Peter and I have been trying to launch an Engadget cellphone spinoff for what, about 15 months now? Who knows, maybe more. But if nothing else, the acquisition’s opened some doors and made certain new projects feasible. Engadget Mobile is one of them, and I’m really excited about it. Finally we can cover mobile news the way we’ve wanted — completely obsessively, that is — without flooding the front page and annoying our readers with endless cellphone post after post.
Pete, the crew (who are numerous in name, but primarily consist of Paul, Evan, Marc, Thomas, Mike, and Gavin), and I have been silently plugging away at this thing for weeks, and I’m really proud of what we’ve got to show off. We’re arriving this morning with over a hundred cellphone and wireless posts in the can, and the page has a slick new look brought together by three expert designers which foreshadows Engadget’s long-fabled visual refashioning (keep an eye out, that’s coming soon). We’ve got some big name sponsors like Microsoft and Sprint, we’re giving away thirty phones including a week’s worth of Treos (or more), and perhaps best of all, we’ve hired some new Engadget cellphone specialists who’ll be manning battle stations.

So, with this we hearby christen Engadget Mobile. Good luck, and godspeed!
