Today

Today was James Kim’s wake, an enormously difficult moment for everyone. It was in the air, written all over everybody’s faces. But then we saw Kati, who didn’t just survive this ordeal, but appeared in an embodiment of courage and grace, traversing the room of hundreds of grievers asking them how they were, and offering “I’m sorry” and a hug. I snapped this picture of Penelope playing with Sabine with family friends as we left. It’s no mystery that his family’s safety is what James wanted above all else, and so this picture is, I suppose, as happy an ending as one can really ask for.
I hope that you’ll remember them this season, as well as another family who lost a father this year.

Thanks for mentioning this. We out here in readerland, much as we sympathize, cannot imagine what those who knew him, whether through work or personally, are feeling through all this, especially his wife and children. It’s good to know that she is holding together and is, as you said, “an embodiment of courage and grace”.
