Yep, I’m leaving Engadget
It’s true, my last day as Engadget’s editor-in-chief will be late next month (my official announcement is here).
Without question, this has been the hardest decision I’ve ever made, but I know it’s the right one. And as much as I’m looking forward to new challenges (and grateful they’re not Motorola-related), I’m also really excited to see Engadget continue its evolution with Josh at the helm, and as part of the AOL Tech network (where I’ll continue to play an advisory role as editor-at-large). Pete and I are both pretty happy with how things worked out, and are definitely looking ahead. (You’re following us on Twitter, right?)
As much as wish I could, for the time being I really can’t talk very much about the details of the new company (which does not yet have a name). I’m pretty stoked though — promise, you’ll hear more soon.
I'm an editor and technology critic in the midst of founding a new web startup:

Not especially surprising news, since I heard almost this exact same quote:
“As I enter my [X]th year at [Company], I’m still totally focused on it, our team, and living up to the enormous level of trust our readers place in us day in and out.”
from half a dozen AOL execs mere weeks or days before they flew the coop. No worries though, good luck on your new venture.
Congrats on everything man. We’ll miss you around here if you stray too far, so don’t, okay?
All the best in the future, and feel free to drop by if you’re ever on this side of the country.
Been a blast, thanks for letting me have a go!
The thing is, that statement is and continues to be true, which is why I’m staying on with Engadget as editor-at-large, you know?
Congrats Ryan, best of luck in whatever your new venture is. How about a farewell Engadget podcast with you an Rojas for old times sake.
Congrats on your future endeavors. Engadget was the first tech blog I got into and it springboarded me into supernerdom. I wish you the best and please keep us updated on what you and Peter have up your sleeve!
Wow. Well, next time I see you at a part I’ll have to shake your hand and say thanks for everything you’ve done for the tech community.
I’ve seen you around at parties but never said hi. I guess I should do that one of these days :)
Good luck Ryan – your regular stuff will be missed!
Congrats Man! Good luck on your new venture. Are you going to continue to keep this blog updated and tell us where you go?
looking forward to your next project.
Hey Ryan. Congrats on your new gig, Engadget is a definite must-read for us techheads. Are you from NY originally? I noticed that 646 area code…Good luck! -Allen
Congrats Ryan. You will be missed, but I am sure you will bring amazing creativity and light to whatever project you work on.
Look forward to seeing your new ventures.
Good luck Ryan. Met you at a reader meetup in Boston, after animating a particularly lewd entry to the “Commercial Contest” a few years back. You were as personable in person as you are witty. Thanks for making Engadget a daily read worth readin’.
Best of luck to you, Ryan.
Congratulations and all the best, Ryan. You’ve done great things with Engadget and I’m sure whatever is ahead of you, will be just as good!
Ryan…
Looking forward to seeing what’s next for you.
Best of luck with the new gig!

“At the debut of a new Apple (Charts, Fortune 500) product, the blows can be below the belt. In San Francisco last June, Lam lined up at 7:30 A.M. to make sure he could snag a coveted aisle seat for CEO Steve Jobs’ 9:30 A.M. appearance. At 8:30, Block arrived to a lengthening line of journalists. He walked straight to Lam, who was first in line, and shook his hand. “Then he just stayed,” Lam says of Block’s cutting. (Block claims there was no formal line.) At a September iPod event, Block charged into San Francisco’s Moscone Center and inadvertently knocked a Gizmodo intern’s video equipment to the floor.”
That sums it up. You’re commitment to whatever you do will continue to keep you at the front of the line. Best of luck!!!
Ryan: Glad to hear we’ll continue to work with you as the editor-at-large at Engadget as well as in your new endeavor. Thanks for all the great reporting at Engadget. You’ve helped make it one of the best sites around.
Congrats Ryan.
Looking forward to your new project.
Congrats Ryan, and all the best on the new venture!
We’re looking forward to making comic fun of you in the future. :D
Jimmie, unfortunately that story isn’t true. There are no lines for Apple keynotes, it’s just a huge mass of people, and I don’t think I’ve ever kicked over anything (let alone expensive video equipment) at a press event like that. I’m still a little annoyed at that shoddy reporting, but hey, whatever!
Congrats Ryan. Stay close the the scene :)
Major congrats. Engadget will miss you as will us readers, but the editor-at-large will keep you hanging out on the fringe.
Good luck on your new venture.
Congratulations, Ryan! I can’t wait to see what you have planned!
Sorry to see you go, and I never did thank you for replying to my horribly awkward blog entry about the “blog wars” in a civil and polite tone (Looking back, I was a little too silly about it).
Congratulations on your next endeavor :)
Congrats. Starting a new venture has to be exciting and nerveracking all at the same time. Good luck!
Kurt
Good luck Ryan. I felt your “non-denial denial” sounded like a non-denial, but regardless i am sad to see you go. If you contribute anything in writing to Engadget, please let it be your in depth reviews. No one, and i mean no one (not Walt, not the Apple guy, no one) can review an item with such depth and clarity as you do. You know exactly every feature as it should work and can spot shortcomings better than anyone. Keep up the good work and an keep rockin in the gadget world.
Best of luck, Ryan. To make a decision like that you must have something awesome in the works, can’t wait to see what you’re up to!
Ryan,
Good luck on the new gig. I will miss the witty posts during Macworld hiccups, insanely indepth product reviews, the classiness you showed during Gizmodo’s little IR scandal, and your personal touch to the coverage of CES. I know that the Engadget staff will continue to keep Engadget Enterprises on top of the breaking-news-shiny-things-are-epic-win dept, and can’t wait to see what you have in store.
See you on the other side. Good luck to you and Pete.
Good luck, Ryan. Hope your new gig keeps you in attendance at all the usual press/analyst events; it’s always fun running into you, and I haven’t seen Peter quite as much since he moved over to the DRK SD. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen you much, lately, either! Where’ve you been?
-avi
Well, I did move out to SF two years ago, Avi! You’ll be seeing us around, we’re not through with the gadget world yet!
Ryan, I wish nothing but the best for you. You’ve clearly done an incredible job at Engadget’s helm, and I have no doubts that whatever venture you jump into, you’ll meet the challenges and succeed. I only wish my application to Engadget didn’t suck and I had a chance to work with you. ;)
Good luck! I’m super-excited to see what’s coming next.
Oh no, that really puts the nail in the coffin as far as me wanting the Engadget Podcast to return :)
Good Luck in the future, looking forward to what you come up with next
Congrats for your work.

I’ll miss your work with Engadget (and the podcasts too!). I can honestly say I’ve read engadget every day for the last few years because of you and Peter. You built that shit! Love ya man! hit me up if you’re looking for a graphic/web designer/amature blogger! It would be an honor to help you with your new adventure!
I wanna join you Ryan!
Pete
Wow, I come back from vacation (and a week offline) to find Engadget will never be the same! :0)
I think you and Peter have great vision and good business sense, so I predict great things. Keep us informed, and now I have to go cull through the Twitter posts I have missed to see what clues you are dropping!
Hi Ryan,
I’ve been a fan of what you’ve accomplished at Engadget for such a long time. Just the other day I was going through Engadget archives and came across a post referring to a then forthcoming Blackberry (the 8700 series I believe) as a Treo Killer… Imagine, a time when a “Treo Killer” was a still coveted position, and the Treo was the de-facto smartphone! Well that’s how long I’ve enjoyed Engadget. Thanks for all of the great coverage.
Over the years, I’ve also come to really miss the Podcast, which was so awesome and a highlight for my week just as much as a new episode of Battlestar Galactica. I hope your new project works out well and will satisfy your new goals for your future.
Best Wishes,
Mike Moll
Sounds like an exciting time for you; good luck. Keep me/everyone posted on the new project. I’d love to hear updates.
Does anyone know if Ryan still does or will be doing podcasts?
Good luck in your new endeavours and congrats for everything you acheived at engadget. We’re now one step further away from a Block & Rojas podcast and it sad how upsetting I find that.
Conor, are we though? I wouldn’t count it out!
