A new kind of RCRD LBL
I was a little occupied today, but it looks like Pete’s new thing has finally gotten out. I’ve been hearing about RCRD LBL for quite a while, and I think congratulations are definitely order — Pete and Downtown came up with a really inventive idea here. It’s about time someone came around and shook things [...]
DRM is like…
DRM can be a hard thing to verbalize — especially to those who aren’t too familiar with it does. So some clever souls on Flickr whipped up the DRM is like… photo pool. Absolutely worth checking out. Via core77.
WordPress 2.3 and beyond
I certainly do like WordPress quite a bit (and use it to run this site), so I was stoked to hear Matt Mullenweg talk at Pixelodeon about what’s to come for the platform. In WordPress 2.3, due in about three months (they’re on a four month release cycle now), the WP gang is adding tagging [...]
Bought ryanblock.com
Shortly after I started at Engadget in 2004 a registrar took ryanblock.com. Ok, fine, that was my own stupid fault, I should have owned it anyway. Well, it’s a mistake I can finally say I’ve corrected — it’s also easily the most begrudging $400 I’ve ever spent. Ever. But as readers probably know, I just [...]
Four questions for David Liu, SVP, AOL Portals
Last week the internet community got an interesting jolt to the system, as AOL’s new AOL.com beta 3 portal debuted for public review. The reaction was less than positive, shall we say, given its uncanny resemblance to Yahoo’s page. (More links here.) Even though I can’t be much more distant from the division at AOL [...]
Users turn against Digg: anatomy of a massive online revolt
Brace yourself: there is a revolt underway at Digg. Users are virulently spreading the HD DVD AACS decryption key against Digg’s wishes, with each removed post spawning dozens more in its place. But how did such a loyal userbase as Digg’s so quickly divert its all-consuming energy to defying — even damaging — the company [...]
Just why are there so few women on Digg, anyway?
Come for the intelligent, totally non-sexist commentary, stay for the well-targeted advertising. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up.
AOL columnist decries blogs
This is just hilarious. Tim Marman points out that in the latest issue of Giant, AOL Black Voices columnist Jawn Murray shares his feelings about blogs: “Blogs are online diaries written by your average Joe — people who don’t work in the entertainment industry and have no formaly journalism training. They report arbitrary gossip, things [...]
This summer’s hot trend: leave your acquired startup behind
Jason and Judith did it. The Dodgeball peeps did it. Ben Brown did it. Let’s face it, working for a big company can really make life — and your work — really suck. Fortunately, we (at Engadget) been able to hunker down thus far, but it makes me wonder: shouldn’t the trend be more along [...]
Froogle gets totally boring name
C’mon, Google Product Search? I’m sorry, but Froogle was such a better name, and what’s more it reminds users that the company has a sense of humor, and isn’t some massive, homogenous, internet supergiant. Can’t we have Froogle back optionally?
